Are you looking for a way to give back to the community?

The LAYC Career Academy is currently seeking volunteers (tutors, career coaches, mentors and more)  who would like to use their skills and experience to assist students in achieving their academic and career goals.

How will your service impact our students?

Volunteers play a critical role in ensuring our students have access to the resources and support which will help them succeed. The extra time and support provided by a tutor or mentor can be that driving push a student needs to realize their full potential.

Tutor

Time Commitment: A minimum of 2 hours per week (2 sessions/day). Sessions last approximately 55 minutes and are hosted between the hours of 10am to 3pm weekly from Monday through select Fridays.

Opportunity: LAYC Career Academy is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic tutors to work one-on-one with our students in ANY of the following subject areas:

  • Math (varying levels)
  • Science (varying levels)
  • English/Language Arts (varying levels)
  • Social Studies (varying levels)
  • ELL (English Language Learner) Support
  • Other subjects (Microsoft Office, A+, etc)

The Tutoring Coordinator will provide introductory training, tutoring materials, and ongoing support to volunteers. In order to maintain our unique program, we depend on the commitment and consistency of our volunteers in providing support for our students in their journey to greatness. Please be sure to commit to at least two hours a week and to communicating in advance of any expected absences. All tutors must have at least two years of college completed OR a minimum of six undergraduate credits in the area which they will tutor.

Career Coaches/Mentors

Time Commitment:  Schedules vary by coach availability and structure of support (minimum of 1-2 hour weekly OR monthly sessions)

Opportunity: Our students are preparing to enter college or start a career. Many will enter the IT (Information Technology) field or the Medical field. Assist our students acquire jobs, get into programs, and attend college! Use your job skills to mentor the next generation in preparing for college and career by:

  • Mentoring and assisting students with preparation activities for job placement
  • Giving feedback on cover letters, resumes, business writing, college entrance essays, LinkedIn profile, etc
  • Navigating the interview process
  • Building students’ soft skills
  • Demonstrating how to conduct an active and effective job search
  • Establishing successful networking skills

The College and Career Access Coordinator will work closely with Career Coaches/Mentors, assisting with scheduling times with students, planning activities, and evaluating impact.  All career coaches must have at least 1-2 years of professional experience.
